HostPapa Hosting Review

Hostpapa is one of the only Canadian hosting companies to expand into the aggressive US market. With servers outside Toronto, they’re central enough to provide good service to most of North America. In business since 2006, they work hard to be as green as possible. With shared, VPS, and reseller options, HostPapa’s offering is broad enough to cater to most hosting tastes.

Prices starting at $3.95/Month

Shared hosting

HostPapa has a three tiered pricing scheme for their shared hosting, starting at $5.99 per month for 36 months and going up to $18.99 per month for 36 months. Each shared plan includes:

  • Free domain registration
  • Access to their own website builder
  • Panda Cloud AntiSpam Protection
  • 1-click installs on over 300 common web apps via Softaculous
  • cPanel control panel
  • 30 day money back guarantee

Starter package: $5.99 per month

The starter package is priced extremely attractively compared to other hosting companies, and with the large variety of HostPapa add-ons like website builders and Softaculous access, it’s enough to get most businesses online quickly and effectively. It includes:

  • 100GB disk space
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • SSD drives
  • 2 domains and 25 subdomains
  • 25 MySQL databases (with phpMyAdmin)
  • $225 in marketing credits

Business package: $9.99 per month

The Business plan is designed to be a little more robust and built for more traffic. It includes, in addition to everything that the Starter Plan comes with:

  • Unlimited websites, disk space, and bandwidth
  • A better edition of HostPapa’s website builder (more design templates, among other things)
  • CDN caching
  • Unlimited domains hosted, subdomains, and add-on domains
  • Unlimited MySQL databases
  • SEO and marketing assistance from HostPapa’s own services

Business Pro package: $18.99 per month

There are some add-ons (see below) but what really sets the Business Pro plan apart are what HostPapa calls their Rocket Fast Premium Servers. These run three times the speed of their normal servers by loading them with less accounts, providing you with more CPU power for your site, and by exclusively running the latest configurations like php and MySQL. The Business Pro plan also includes (with all the stuff in cheaper plans):

  • Better HostPapa website builder, including mobile, Facebook, and CSS editing
  • Domain Privacy Protection
  • Domain SSL Certificate
  • Automated Website Backup (1GB)
  • SiteLock Basic
  • Dedicated IP address

HostPapa runs CloudLinux, a variation of CentOS, on their shared servers. The benefit of CloudLinux helps with resource regulation and management in a shared environment. HostPapa and A2 Hosting [link to A2 page] are the only two who run CloudLinux.

Reseller hosting

Hostpapa offers a huge range of reseller option for its clients with 5 different pricing plans, each one with more disk space and bandwidth. These plans start at $19.95 per month for 12 months for 50GB disk space and 500GB of bandwidth and go up to $79.95 per month for 200GB disk space and 1.4TB bandwidth. Each reseller plan comes with:

  • cPanel control
  • WHM control panel
  • Client  Exec or WHMCS billing software
  • RAID backup
  • Unlimited domains, add-on domains and subdomains
  • Domain reseller account

VPS hosting

HostPapa also runs a VPS hosting service from $49.99 per month for 12 months and going up to $149.99 per month for 12 months. As your plan improves the amount of power, RAM, and disk space increases. Their basic plan (called VPS-Plus) includes 4CPU cores, 1.5GB RAM, and 50GB disk space, while their top tier plan (VPS-Premium) has 8 CPU cores, 6GB RAM, and 200GB disk space.

Each VPS plan runs on CentOS 6, but with root access, you can change it to whatever you want. HostPapa offers full management on the server side of thigns, but any problem you have with a third party (e.g. any software you use) and you’re on your own. Each VPS plan comes with:

  • cPanel and WHM access
  • FTP accounts
  • Hyper V technology dedicated memory
  • Unlimited MySQL and PostgreSQL databases

Linux

HostPapa runs CloudLinux on their shared servers, a variation of CentOS in order to improve the experience in a shared server environment and keep resources allocation tight. CloudLinux also helps them enforce their unlimited policy, which (like other hosting companies) is contingent on reasonable use and HostPapa strictly monitoring the situation.

For their reseller and VPS options they drop CloudLinux and instead run CentOS 6 pure. For reseller hosting, this is the only option – without root access, you’re unable to change your OS. But for their VPS option, HostPapa is more than happy for you to adopt a Linux distribution that better suits you – you just need to be able to fully manage it, as there is no help from HostPapa.

Conclusion

HostPapa offers a range of products and services that are going to make them useful for most developers looking for a hosting partner. However, their lack of a dedicated server solution rules them out for bigger websites or hosts looking for more space. Moreover, HostPapa does not have the glowing reputation for customer service that other companies have, and at the time of writing their service line took 20 minutes to answer. All in all, while they have excellent start up discounts and ample design and marketing tools and resources, HostPapa might not be the best option for anything more than simple shared hosting.
