HostMonster Hosting Review

HostMonster is one of the older hosting games in town, getting individuals and businesses online since 1996.  They’re owned by Endurance International Group and are the sister site to Bluehost – as such, their server configuration, Linux distro, pricing and services are identical (see our Bluehost page [link to bluehost page] for a more detailed breakdown).

Prices starting at $5.99/Month

Shared hosting

HostMonster has three shared hosting plans: Starter ($5.99 per month full price), Plus ($9.99 per month full price) and Business Pro ($19.99 per month full price). Each plan includes:

  • Unlimited bandwidth (as long as your usage is within reason)
  • SSH access
  • Site stats, custom cron jobs, .htaccess overrides
  • MySQL and PostgreSQL, PHP.INI file support
  • CloudFlare CDN
  • cPanel account control, FTP access

With regards to software, HostMonster offers all the basic languages and their hosting platform is compatible with standard CMS/CRM and blogging platforms, like Drupal, Joolma, and WordPress.  Each plan also comes with access to Endurance International Group’s own digital marketplace for WordPress resources called Mojo Marketplace.

For ecommerce, HostMonster covers its shared users with compatibility with OS Commerce Shopping Cart, Agora Shopping Cart, Cube Cart Shopping Cart, and Zen Cart Shopping Cart.

The Starter plan gets you going with 100GB storage, 100 email accounts, 1 domain, 1 year of domain registration, 20 MySQL databases, 1,000 Database tables, and basic CloudFlare CDN and site backups. If you spring for the Business Pro plan, you get unlimited:

  • Email accounts
  • Storage
  • Domain hosting
  • Subdomains
  • MySQL databases

In addition, you get a domain name for life, better site backups, 2 domains scanned by scam protection, and 3,000 MySQL data tables. You also get a SSL certificate, a dedicated IP, and Domain Privacy for 1 domain.

All of their shared servers are run on CentOS 6 and users are not permitted root access to the server. HostMonster is a LAMP host.

VPS and dedicated hosting

VPS servers from $29.99 per month

HostMonster also offers powerful cloud technology VPS servers. They have four packages, ranging from $29.99 per month up to $119.99 per month for their Ultimate package. Generally speaking, the more you spend the more computing power you get, with more CPU cores, more RAM, storage, and transfers. Their VPS servers are built on OpenStack.

Each VPS plan comes with:

  • Enhanced cPanel control and WHM.
  • Root access to the server (you can pick your Linux distro)
  • Guaranteed resources with KVM Hypervisor virtualization
  • 1 dedicated IP address

The least expensive VPS plan will get you dual 2.2 GHz cores with 2GB RAM 30GB SAN storage (you can buy more starting at $10 per 30GB) and 1TB monthly bandwidth. Their plans get progressively more powerful, with the Ultimate plan capping wit quad 2.2 Ghz cores 8GB RAM, 240GB SAN storage, and 4TB monthly bandwidth.

Again, each VPS server is pre-installed with CentOS 6.5, but with your root access you can alter and change your Linux distribution to whatever you want. However, they don’t offer any support for other OS options.

Dedicated hosting from $149.99 per month

The last core offering of HostMonster is their dedicated hosting. Each server comes with a 30 day money back guarantee, a built in cache with your servers own RAM, RAID 1 protected hard drives, root access, and an enhanced cPanel control panel.

Their lowest package from $149.99 per month gets you a dual core 2.3 Intel Xeon processor, 3MB cache, 4GB RAM, 500GB RAID 1 protected storage, 5TB monthly bandwidth, a free domain name and CentOS 6.5 (64 bit). Their top tier package, the Premium, gets you a quad core 3.3 Ghz Intel Xeon processor, 8MB cache, 16GB RAM, 1000GB RAID 1 storage, and 15TB bandwidth.

Like their VPS options, they run their dedicated servers on CentOS 6.5.

Linux

Like other LAMP hosts and most of the other companies in the Endurance International Group, HostMonster uses CentOS 6.5 on all of its servers due to its stability, its versatility, and its streamlined maintenance. It’s also a fairly secure option, with less frequent updates leading to less bugs. All in all, it’s a good choice for a shared hosting environment.

However, their VSP and their dedicated option do offer root access via cPanel and WHM, so if you do want to run a different Linux distribution then you definitely have that option.

Conclusion

Like Bluehost, HostMonster is a centre of the road, nothing fancy hosting option. They offer the basics for each plan, have good customer service and a good uptime rating, and will generally get you going online pretty quickly, whether you’re a shared, VPS, or dedicated client.
